THE PROCEDURES

Parkview’s surgical weight loss program offers 3 gastric bypass procedures:

Laparoscopic Banding (Lap-band): May be appropriate for patients 75 lbs or more. This procedure is less invasive and may be reversible. A camera and surgical instruments are inserted through small incisions made in the abdominal wall. This approach is considered minimally-invasive because it replaces the need for on long incision to open the abdomen. This is a purely restrictive surgical procedure in which a band is placed around the uppermost part of the stomach. This band divides the stomach into two portions: one small and one larger portion. Because food is regulated, most patients feel full faster. Food digestion occurs through the normal digestive and absorption process.

Open Rou-en-Y Gastric Bypass: This procedure is performed through one long incision in the abdomen. A small stomach pouch is created from a portion of the upper stomach. The remainder of the stomach is not removed. The outlet from this newly formed pouch empties directly into the lower portion of the jejunum, thus bypassing calorie absorption. This is done by dividing the small intestine, and constructing a connection with the new, smaller stomach pouch. The length of either segment of the intestine can be increased or decreased to produce lower or higher levels of malabsorption.

Laparoscopic Rou-en-Y Gastric Bypass: This surgery employs the same principles as the “open” procedure. However several small incisions are made instead of the one large incision, therefore allow for a fast recovery time.
